Should Christians Celebrate Christmas?

Some Christians don’t celebrate Christmas because they view today’s current tradition of bells, candles, holly, and yuletide as practices of pagan worship. The problem with this kind of thinking is when they focus on the paganism, they lose the symbolism and association with the true meaning of Christmas. Bells are played to ring out the joyous news of Christ’s birth, candles are lit to remind us that Christ is the Light of the world (John 1:4–9), a star is placed on the top of a Christmas tree to remember the Star of Bethlehem, and gifts are exchanged to remind us of the gifts the Wise Men brought to Jesus.

Some Christians also refuse to place Christmas trees in their homes. They use verses Jeremiah 10:3-4 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

It is always good to compare scripture with scripture. Isaiah 44:9-18 refers to cutting down trees to fashion them into idols. The people would then decorate the idols with silver and gold and worship them.

Isaiah 44:14-15 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it. Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

Another reason some Christians choose not to celebrate Christmas is because the Bible doesn’t give us the date of Christ’s birth. Although it is true that December 25 may not be even close to the time Jesus was born, we know that He was born…no matter the date we should celebrate His birth.

Yes, Christmas has become increasingly secularized. There’s not much “Christian” about what the world celebrates today.

For many Christians who do celebrate Christmas, they see the various Christmas celebrations as opportunities to let the world know that Jesus’ birth is the true reason for the season.

Although the Scriptures neither command nor forbid the celebration of Christmas, we should always celebrate and remember the Lord and what He has done for us, including His birth, life, death, burial, and resurrection every day, including Christmas.
